The Hang was developed in the year 2000 and introduced at the Musikmesse Frankfurt in 2001. It is 52 cm (20 in) in diameter and has a height of 24 cm (9 in). The two deep drawn steel hemispheres of the Hang are hardened by a process known as gas nitridization. The term Handpan is used to describe the instruments inspired by the original PANArt Hang. These instruments usually have a dimple in the middle of each note and generally have a Gu (hole) on the underside of the instrument.

One of its inventors, Felix Rohner, had been playing the Trinidad steel drum since the 1970s and he founded a steel drum company called PANArt in the 1990s, along with his business partner, Sabrina Scharer.
